National Dog Week 2024: celebrating our canine companions

The last week of September is National Dog Week, a popular time for dog lovers across the globe to celebrate and advocates for our beloved dogs.

National Dog Week gives dog owners, animal advocates, and communities a chance to honour the important role dogs play in our lives.

From being loyal companions to service animals, these four-legged friends enrich our lives in ways we often take for granted.

It’s estimated that more than 40% of Australian households own a dog, and National Dog Week is a chance to celebrate our love for not just our pets but also to raise awareness about their welfare and the broader issues related to dog ownership, care, and adoption.

National Dog Week was first established in the United States in 1928 by Captain William Lewis Judy, a World War I veteran and noted dog lover. Captain Judy founded the event to promote responsible dog ownership and increase awareness about the loyalty and service that dogs provide to humans. The week was also aimed at reducing the number of stray and abandoned dogs by encouraging adoption and proper care.

The event quickly gained international recognition, spreading to countries like Australia, where dogs hold a similarly cherished place in society. Over the decades, the spirit of National Dog Week has remained the same: to celebrate the human-dog bond while advocating for better treatment and care of our canine companions.

Dogs have a unique ability to impact our emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing. Numerous studies have shown that dog owners tend to have lower stress levels, better cardiovascular health, and an increased sense of happiness. Whether itโ€™s a quiet moment on the couch or a playful romp at the park, our dogs provide us with companionship and joy in everyday life.

For many people, dogs have an even broader role. Many work as service animals, assisting those with disabilities or working as therapy dogs in hospitals and aged care facilities.

Additionally, dogs have served with distinction in the military, the police force, and as sniffer dogs in airports across the nation.

However, National Dog Week is more than just a celebration. It also aims to raise awareness about issues facing dogs in Australia, such as animal cruelty, puppy farming, and the ongoing need for ethical adoption.

According to the RSPCA, over 100,000 dogs are surrendered each year to shelters in Australia.

Itโ€™s a sobering statistic that leads many advocates to use National Dog Week as a chance to urge people to consider adopting a rescue dog instead of purchasing from breeders, and to ensure that dogs are not treated as commodities but as loving companions who deserve proper care and attention.

There are numerous ways to get involved in National Dog Week, whether youโ€™re a dog owner, animal organisation, or a passionate advocate for animal welfare.

Here are a few activities you can enjoy:

  • Adopt, donโ€™t shop

If youโ€™re thinking about getting a dog, National Dog Week is the perfect time to adopt from a shelter or rescue organisation. Shelters across Australia often run adoption events during this week, making it easier to find your perfect canine companion.

  • Volunteer at a local shelter

Many animal shelters rely heavily on volunteers to walk, feed, and care for the animals in their facilities. Volunteering your time during National Dog Week can make a huge difference to the welfare of dogs waiting for their forever homes.

  • Organise a dog-friendly gathering

If you have a dog, why not host a get-together with friends and their pets? Itโ€™s a great way to socialise your dog and provide them with the stimulation they need while also enjoying the company of like-minded dog lovers.

  • Donate to an animal charity

Animal shelters and rescue organisations are often in need of financial assistance. Donating to causes that support dog welfare can help provide food, medical care, and shelter to dogs in need.

  • Spread awareness on social media

Use your social media platforms to share stories about your dog or information on how others can adopt, foster, or support animal welfare causes. Popular hashtags include #NationalDogWeek, #AdoptDontShop, and #RescueDogsAustralia.

While National Dog Week is a great time to celebrate and have fun with your dog, itโ€™s also an opportunity to reflect on the responsibilities of being a dog owner.

Owning a dog is a long-term commitment, requiring time, effort, and financial investment.

From providing proper nutrition to regular veterinary check-ups and daily exercise, owning a dog involves many responsibilities.

Training and socialisation are essential to ensure that dogs can safely interact with other animals and people.

Responsible ownership also includes microchipping and registering your pet to ensure they can be safely returned if they ever get lost.

Not that we need reminding, but National Dog Week is an opportunity for us to reflect on the love and loyalty dogs offer us daily.

Whether you already own a dog or are thinking about adopting one, this week is an excellent opportunity to celebrate your pet and contribute to their wellbeing while also thinking about the welfare of all dogs.

By promoting responsible dog ownership and supporting ethical animal welfare initiatives, we can ensure that all dogs in Australia receive the care and respect they deserve.

So, grab your leash, treat your dog to an extra-long walk, and give them the love theyโ€™ve earned this National Dog Week!
