High-quality, healthy pet food is priority for pet parents: survey

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact households, Australian pet owners aren’t cutting the costs of their dog or cat’s meals, with many saying they are still prioritising quality, healthy pet food over any cheaper alternative.

A new survey by Addiction Pet Foods reveals that 57% of Australian pet owners refuse to downgrade their pet’s high-quality food, even during tough economic times. The research highlights a growing trend: pets deserve nothing but the best.

With 80% of pet owners believing their pets deserve a diet as healthy as their own, Australians are showing their dedication to keeping their pets healthy and happy. For 60% of respondents, premium, natural ingredients are an absolute must when choosing pet food. The focus on quality ingredients isn’t just about treating pets—it’s about giving them what they need to thrive.

Dr Kate Mornement, a Board-Certified Applied Animal Behaviourist, says a high-quality diet is necessary for a pet’s overall health and wellness.

“Investing in a high-quality diet, which includes a nature-led approach and the use of meat-first formulas, grain-free options, and novel proteins, will help reduce vet bills in the long run, support pets with allergies, and may even improve behaviour,” Dr Kate says.

Your pet’s behaviour is closely tied to their diet, and the survey findings make this connection crystal clear.

Dr Kate tells Animal Friendly Life that poor-quality food can leave pets irritable, hyperactive, or even anxious.

“A pet’s diet impacts their behaviour by influencing mood, energy levels, and cognitive function,” she says.

“Nutritional deficiencies or allergens can trigger issues like hyperactivity or anxiety, while a nutritionally complete diet supports overall wellness.”

Pet parents are becoming increasingly aware of dietary red flags, with 40% recognising excessive scratching and 36% noticing reduced playfulness as potential signs of food-related issues.

Other symptoms, like lethargy or changes in appetite, are also commonly linked to diet problems by more than half of pet owners.

Common signs your pet might need a change of diet

  • Reduced playfulness
  • Hyperactivity or lethargy
  • Changes in appetite or digestive issues
  • Excessive scratching or licking

Even with the best intentions, many Aussie pet parents still feel unsure when it comes to managing their pet’s allergies.

While 58% of dog owners and 50% of cat owners feel they have some understanding of food sensitivities, 46% admit they’re unsure about which foods are safe for their pets.

Proteins like beef, chicken, and dairy are common culprits for allergies.

Other allergens, such as wheat, lamb, and eggs, are less common but still worth keeping an eye on.

Dr Kate recommends focusing on high-quality ingredients to reduce the chance of allergies and keep pets feeling their best:

“Look for whole animal proteins from real meat sources like chicken, turkey, beef, or salmon,” explains Dr Kate.

“These support muscle maintenance and energy.

“Additionally, healthy fats, omega-3 fatty acids, fruits, vegetables, and probiotics contribute to optimal health and cognitive function.”

The survey coincides with the launch of Addiction Pet Foods, a brand dedicated to solving pet dietary challenges like allergies and sensitivities.

Founded in New Zealand, Addiction Pet Foods takes a nature-led approach, crafting premium pet food with innovative formulas designed to help pets thrive.

The brand’s story began when its founder, Jerel, set out to help his Golden Retriever, Zack, recover from severe allergies.

Today, Addiction Pet Foods provides a wide range of palatable, nutritious options tailored to pets with unique dietary needs.

“It’s fantastic to see Australian pet parents actively involved in choosing the right food for their pets,” Dr Kate says.

“This commitment ensures long-term health and happiness, allowing pets to lead vibrant, healthy lives.”

  1. Whole animal proteins, including chicken, turkey, or salmon.
  2. Healthy fats and omega-3 fatty acids help brain health and also gives pets a shiny coat.
  3. Complex carbohydrates give pets sustained energy.
  4. Fruits and vegetables are great for boosting immunity.
  5. Probiotics and prebiotics to gut health.

As more Australian pet owners focus on premium nutrition, the pet food industry is stepping up to meet their needs.

Whether it’s managing allergies, improving behaviour, or simply keeping pets healthy and happy, there’s no doubt that a healthy pet diet is pivotal to a pet’s overall health and happiness.
