Animals and spirituality: 6 advocacy rituals for the October New Moon

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

As more people explore spirituality in everyday life, many are also developing a strong connection with nature — especially the animals we share it with. This, combined with the growing awareness of how collective energy can actually make a real difference, we are starting to see a shift in the way people advocate, too.

With the October New Moon fast approaching – and as many people already do regular rituals throughout the lunar cycle – it’s a good way to begin weaving animal care and awareness into your spiritual practice.

This post includes some easy but impactful ways you can help create a ripple effect of compassion — one intention at a time — to help shape a kinder, more conscious world for all beings.

Create animal healing rituals for the October New Moon

The New Moon marks the beginning of each lunar cycle. Although the Moon disappears from view, this phase is spiritually rich – especially for practices and rituals with an intention on new beginnings.

Unlike the Full Moon – which is ideal for releasing what no longer serve us, and high-energy rituals – the New Moon is more introspective. It’s a time to pause, reflect, and plant the seeds of what we hope to grow — within ourselves, and in the world around us.

So, that means it’s a powerful time to set healing intentions — not just for ourselves, but for animals, nature, and causes that are close to your heart.

What is spiritual – or sacred -activism?

By incorporating animal healing into your New Moon ritual (or any other spiritual practice), you become part of a growing wave of sacred activism – a form of activism that doesn’t involve disruptive, hostile tactics (which really just do more harm than good for a cause).

Instead, it’s the conscious act of including other living beings in your spiritual work, knowing that healing energy moves outward from the individual to the collective.

As you offer healing to the animals, you shift your own vibration. You open the heart. And from that opening, kindness flows more freely — into your choices, relationships, and the wider world.

The term sacred activism was coined by British spiritual teacher and mystical scholar Andrew Harvey, founder of the Institute for Sacred Activism.

4 reasons to include an animal intention in your spiritual practice

Here’s just some of the reasons why now is a powerful time for you to begin; including:

  • Spirituality is expanding beyond the self. More people are realising that true healing must include our relationship with the planet and its beings.
  • Animals give so much for us- this is one way you can give back, by honouring their place in the sacred web of life.
  • Rituals can create ripples. It might not seem like much, but every person who does it contributes to the collective field — shaping more compassionate thoughts, decisions, and behaviours.
  • Animals need our support. With increasing environmental stress, habitat loss, and neglect of animal welfare, even a small, consistent spiritual practice can be part of a larger energetic movement for protection and healing.

The power of collective frequencies — how shared intentions can help animals

One of the most beautiful outcomes of spiritual practices like this is that energy multiplies when it’s shared. So whether it’s a healing circle, guided meditation, or a ritual done in solitude, when many people hold the same intention — the vibrational impact expands. Instead of working alone, you’re helping create a kind of energetic web across space and time.

This is the power of collective frequency — the idea that our thoughts, emotions, and intentions can harmonise with others to create waves of healing, compassion, and awareness. And when those energies are focused through a spiritual portal like the New Moon or Full Moon, they become even more potent.

Imagine hundreds (or thousands) of people holding space for animal healing, peace in nature, or the protection of a specific species — all under the same moon phase.

That kind of intention doesn’t just feel good — it moves energy!

Here’s some ideas you can use in your spiritual practice:

  • 🌙Set a healing intention

Write down or speak a clear, heartfelt intention — for a pet, a species, or the wellbeing of animals in general. For example:

“I call in healing for all animals living in fear or pain.”

“May my cat feel safe, calm, and well.”

“I offer this intention for the health of our oceans and marine life.”

  • 🌙Use crystals for New Moon healing

Try these crystals for animal healing:
Rose Quartz – for emotional healing and unconditional love
Green Aventurine – for physical vitality and growth
Amethyst – for calming stress and offering spiritual protection
Clear Quartz – to amplify your intention

Place these around a pet’s space, on your altar, or hold them during your ritual. Important- make sure your pet isn’t able to chew the crystal, always keep them in a pouch.

  • Send distant healing to wildlife or animal causes

Visualise a specific ecosystem or group of animals — such as forest-dwelling marsupials, reef ecosystems, or endangered birds — and send healing energy from the heart. Even 5–10 minutes of focused prayer or visualisation can ripple outward.

  • Add animal totems or symbols to your altar

Honour animal spirit guides by placing figures, feathers, shells, or artwork on your altar. Invite their wisdom and presence into your ritual. Each animal holds unique symbolism (e.g. owl for wisdom, kangaroo for strength and progress, dolphin for emotional healing).

  • Write a letter or prayer

Write a short prayer, message, or letter to a pet, species, or Spirit on behalf of the animals. You can safely burn it as an offering, or bury it as a symbolic planting of intention.

  • Create a blessing circle

Use a candle, crystals (like rose quartz or amethyst), and a photo or object representing the animal(s) you’re focusing on. Sit quietly and visualise them surrounded in golden light. Speak words of blessing and protection.
