In a move aimed at promoting responsible pet ownership and protecting local wildlife, the City of Bayswater has announced a new initiative to help residents keep their cats indoors.

A $500 incentive is being offered to residents to support the construction of secure outdoor enclosures for their pets. The program is part of the city’s broader efforts to preserve native fauna and encourage responsible pet management.

The incentive program, titled the “Cat Enclosure Subsidy Scheme,” will provide eligible residents with financial assistance to build or purchase cat enclosures. These structures allow cats to enjoy the outdoors while preventing them from roaming freely and potentially threatening local wildlife. By supporting the creation of these secure environments, the City of Bayswater aims to mitigate the impact of domestic animals on native species.

What is the Bayswater Cat Enclosure Subsidy Scheme?

The subsidy scheme is open to all residents of the City of Bayswater who own cats. Participants can receive up to $500 towards the cost of materials or the purchase of a pre-made cat enclosure. The initiative encourages cat owners to confine their pets in a safe and humane manner, reducing the risks associated with free roaming.

Eligible expenses under the program include the purchase of new enclosures, materials for self-constructed enclosures, and professional installation services. However, it does not cover routine veterinary care or food costs. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, and funding is limited.

Protecting wildlife from cats: responsible pet ownership

Mayor Filomena Piffaretti emphasised the environmental benefits of the initiative, highlighting the impact of domestic cats on local wildlife populations. “Cats are natural hunters, and even well-fed pets will hunt. This program helps protect our native birds and other wildlife while allowing cats to experience the outdoors safely,” she stated.

The City of Bayswater, known for its commitment to biodiversity and sustainability, is home to numerous native species, some of which are vulnerable to predation by domestic cats. By encouraging residents to keep their pets indoors or in enclosures, the city aims to reduce these threats and support conservation efforts.

The Cat Enclosure Subsidy Scheme is part of a broader strategy by the City of Bayswater to engage the community in wildlife conservation and responsible pet ownership. The city plans to conduct workshops and provide educational materials to inform residents about the benefits of keeping pets indoors.

Additionally, the city is exploring partnerships with local businesses to offer discounts on enclosure materials and installation services. These collaborative efforts aim to make the construction of secure cat enclosures more accessible and affordable for residents.

The initiative has already received positive feedback from the community, with many residents expressing interest in participating. The City of Bayswater hopes that the success of this program will inspire other municipalities to implement similar schemes to protect wildlife and promote responsible pet ownership.
