Most popular pet names in Australia: list of the most common cat and dog names

We’ll start with the most popular pet names in Australia. Recently, insurance comparison company, Compare the Market, revealed the list after running the names through their pet insurance search tool.

The findings give us great insight into the preferences of Australian pet owners, and it seems there’s a few names that are particularly popular!

Yep, that’s right, Luna takes the crown for most popular cat AND dog name in Australia right now.

Making Luna’s popularity even more impressive is that it has been chosen nearly three times as often as the second-place name, Bella, among cat owners.

Leo, Charlie, Milo, and Simba also feature prominently in the list of top cat names.

For dogs, Luna again takes the lead, followed by Coco and Frankie.

    Compare the Market pet surveys

Adrian Taylor, General Manager for General Insurance at Compare the Market, says a lot of thought goes into choosing the right pet’s name.

“Whether people are looking to buy a new pet or have brought someone new home recently, choosing a name is a personal decision that reflects the individuality of both the pet and its owner,” Mr Taylor says.

“We’re clearly seeing similar naming trends across cats and dogs, with four of the ten names replicating on both lists

“Between Luna, Charlie, Milo and Bella, there’s a mixture of classic and new-age names that have reached all-star fame.

“So maybe if you’re heading down to the dog park this weekend, just be aware that if you call out any of these names, there may be more than one dog or cat coming your way.”

    Pet insurance in Australia

Compare the Market’s new pet insurance search tool allows owners, and prospective owners, to easily compare policy options for their pets.

The search tool also acts as an education tool for owners about pet insurance and why it’s such an integral part of responsible pet ownership.

Mr Taylor says it’s always best to get pet insurance for your cat or dog at an early age.

“We want pet owners to focus on creating memories with their pets, without having to worry whether they have enough savings if something does go wrong.

“Kittens and puppies are curious creatures and are likely to explore their surroundings, but their adventures may lead them down sometimes dangerous avenues, such as checking out a toxic pufferfish on the beach or eating a stray grape that fell down from the Christmas table.

“Getting pet insurance early means that you have some peace of mind when your pet gets itself into some trouble.

“Additionally, the earlier you get pet insurance, the more likely you’re able to claim on ailments and illnesses that may impact your pet as it gets older.

“Furthermore, people should note that if they decide to switch insurance providers later down the track, the cover with the new provider may be still viewed as a ‘new policy’.

“This means that any pre-existing condition your pet was previously covered for, may no longer be covered in the new policy.”

Disclaimer: The names listed above are based on data collected from Compare the Market’s pet insurance search tool between 1 July 2023 and 31 October 2023 and may vary from other sources.
