Move over Labradors and Golden Retrievers, the Cavoodle has is the most popular dog breed in Australia.
There’s been a noticeable shift in dog preferences across the country in recent years. Budget Direct’s Pet Insurance quote statistics for 2023 showing the Cavoodle is the most common breed needing pet insurance.
Cavoodles – known for their adaptability and appearance – now account for nearly 15% of all dog breeds in insurance quotes nationwide.
The breed has taken over from traditional favourites, the Labrador and Golden Retriever. Both equal for second place at 4.19%.
Rise in popularity of Cavoodles
It’s the largest percentage by any one breed in the last four years of Pet Insurance quote data for the insurance giant.
Jonathan Kerr, Budget Direct’s Chief Growth Officer, says the rise in popularity is likely down to the breed’s suitability for various lifestyles.
He adds they’re also suitable to indoor environments, minimal shedding, and undeniable appeal on social media platforms.
“It has been a rapid rise in popularity for the Cavoodle who represented just 10.85 per cent of Pet Insurance quotes in 2021,” Budget Direct’s Chief Growth Officer, Jonathan Kerr said.
“They were a shining light during COVID as they adapted well to inside environments and any lifestyle, live longer than many other breeds and don’t shed as much hair.
“And they look super cute on social media, you can’t deny that.”
And it’s not surprising to see the breed feature in the most pet insurance claims. The cost of owning a Cavoodle can range between $1,000 and $5,000 per puppy!
